Highly-respected New Zealand businesswoman and professional director Joan Withers has been appointed to the board of Sky.

Sky Chair Philip Bowman welcomed the appointment, saying: “We are delighted to have someone of Joan’s calibre joining our board. She brings a wealth of experience spanning a 25-year career in the media industry, including CEO positions at Fairfax and the Radio Network as well as being the former Chair of TVNZ.

Joan’s depth of governance experience includes her current roles as Chair of The Warehouse Group, Chair of Mercury, and a director of ANZ NZ, and previously Chair of Auckland International Airport.

“Joan has served on the boards of some of New Zealand’s biggest companies and is an accomplished and well-regarded businesswoman. We are looking forward to working with her.”

Joan has been appointed by the Sky board to fill a casual vacancy, effective immediately. She will seek election from Sky shareholders at the AGM on 17 October.


Joan Withers has spent over 25 years working in the media industry holding CEO positions at both Fairfax NZ and The Radio Network and has corporate governance experience spanning 20 years. Her current governance roles include Chair of Mercury NZ (stepping down 27 September 2019), Chair of The Warehouse Group Ltd and as a director of ANZ NZ. She has previously held Chair positions at Auckland International Airport and TVNZ.

Joan is a Trustee of the Louise Perkins Foundation, and is Chair of a steering committee working to increase the percentage of South Auckland Maori and Pacific Island students taking up roles in the health sector.

She holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Auckland. She is also a University of Auckland Distinguished Alumni (2015).

Joan is the author of "A Girl's Guide to Business" which was published by Penguin Books in 1998 and “A Woman’s Place – Life, leadership and lessons from the boardroom” which was published by Penguin Random House in 2017.

She won the CAANZ Media Excellence Award in 2009 and the New Zealand Shareholders Beacon Award in 2014.

In 2015 she was named Supreme Winner in the Women of Influence Awards and was named as Chairperson of the Year in the Deloitte Top 200 Management Awards. Joan was admitted to the Marketing Hall of Fame in 2017.
