Press Release

No, we’re not!

Smithy is staying with Sky and we couldn’t be more pumped.

Those famous words, “You are kidding me!” rang around the globe and were attributed to Smithy when he was commentating at the 2019 Cricket World Cup for Sky Sport – but if you check out the Smith Special link below we think you’ll be surprised.

What we’re not kidding about is the great news that Ian Smith, MBE (for services to cricket), all-round top bloke and New Zealand’s most beloved sporting commentator, has re-signed with Sky for the foreseeable.  The Sky production team is over the moon.

Speaking from Melbourne where he’s prepping for the Boxing Day test, Smith says, “I’ve always loved working with the superbly skilled Sky crew whether it’s local or test match cricket or rugby and will stay here as long as they’re happy to have me.”

Alongside his LEGENDARY cricket analysis and banter, based on years as an expert player, Smithy has also been sideline at more than 150 All Blacks test matches.
Brian Hitchcock, Head of Production says, “Aside from all the fun we’ve had working with Ian over the years, he’s one of the family, he’s a consummate professional, arguably both the BEST cricket commentator and sideline expert in rugby in the world, and he has so much to share with the talent we have coming through. His expertise and passion for sport leaves everyone else in the shade.”

To celebrate the new contract, Sky has put together a reel of some of Smithy’s more memorable moments including the famous 2019 Cricket World Cup.  Back in 2016 we also put together a Day in the Life.  Push play on both and enjoy.
