SKY is pleased to announce that it has secured the exclusive New Zealand broadcast rights for SailGP.

The annual, global sports league, beginning Friday 15th February, will feature bold, cutting-edge technology and awe-inspiring athleticism.

Ten years in the making, SailGP’s vessel of choice will be the electrifying F50 catamarans. Powered by a 24-metre wingsail and flying above the water on hydrofoils, the F50 marks a huge step forward. The F50 is expected to produce a 15 percent performance gain across most racing conditions compared to the AC50 class of the 2017 Americas Cup.

The fan-centric, inshore racing takes place in some of the most iconic harbours around the globe and culminates with a $1 million winner-takes-all match race.

SailGP was created to engage and excite global sports fans year-round in a supercharged, fast-paced version of sailing aimed at increasing its mainstream popularity and introducing the next generation to the sport.

SKY Director of Sport, Richard Last says: “We are very happy to secure this deal with SailGP to be able to broadcast the next generation of sailing for our SKY Sport sailing fans. It is an extremely exciting version of sailing featuring New Zealand based technologies, the boats were all built here in Warkworth and they’re absolutely cutting edge. It’s going to be pretty spectacular to witness these F50 catamarans fleet racing at full blast.”

SailGP Head of Broadcast, Sam Leadsom says: “We’re extremely pleased to partner with SKY Sport. We know that we can depend on them to reliably deliver SailGP to Kiwi sailing fans anywhere in New Zealand and we hope that this new product resonates well with all sports fans in New Zealand.”
