The Ice King

The Ice King

Wednesday 20 November 8.30pm Channel 039

John Curry transformed ice skating from a dated sport into an exalted art form. Often hailed as the greatest skater of all time, Curry drew acclaim for his innovative balance of artistry and athleticism, bridging the divide between dance and skating.  Publicly coming out on the night of his Olympic win in 1976, he became the first openly gay Olympian. Toxic yet charming, rebellious yet elitist, emotionally aloof yet spectacularly needy, ferociously ambitious yet bent on self-destruction, this was a man forever on the run, from his father's ghost, his country, and even himself. By the time he was diagnosed with HIV and eventually AIDS, Curry had withdrawn from performance and the public eye, his body broken by both the sport and the disease.
