NZ POLO OPEN LIVE ON SKY SPORT

Chukka, pony goal, neck shot*… You could swear they were about to drop the hottest album of 2018. But in fact, you’d be much more likely to hear them referenced in the game of polo than on a top 40 station.

Polo, the game that was invented 2,500 years ago in Persia as a cavalry training exercise has changed very little over the years from the traditional one.

Fast forward a few years to 2018, and SKY Sport is proud to be producing and broadcasting the 41st edition of the Land Rover NZ Polo Open LIVE from Clevedon, Sunday 18th February

First held in 1977 the NZ Polo Open is regarded as one of the Southern Hemisphere’s premier polo championships, and features professional polo players from New Zealand, Australia, England, South Africa, Chile, and Argentina.

So to dust up your knowledge on one of the world’s oldest games, here are the basics of polo:

Polo is a sport played on horseback between two teams of four players
The objective is to score goals against an opposing team while stopping them from doing the same
Players score by driving a small hard white ball into the opposing team's goal using a long-handled wooden mallet
A chukka is the term used for period of play in polo, seven and a half minutes long, there are six chukkas in a polo match
For each chukka, a player will use a different horse and most professional players use more than six horses during a match
A polo ground is larger than four rugby fields (almost 10 acres) with eight players and eight horses at a time moving at over 35kph
The polo ponies are extremely skilled with fast reflexes; they move and turn at high speed. New Zealand polo ponies are very well regarded around the world for their bloodlines and breeding that has been well established over time
