SKY SPORT GRASSROOTS RUGBY CELEBRATES 21 YEARS ON AIR
NEW ZEALAND’S LONGEST RUNNING SPORTS SHOW

Since 1999, GrassRoots Rugby has been bringing New Zealand rugby fans television coverage of the 640 rugby clubs in our country, both urban and rural, telling the stories about the clubs, their people and their communities.

In 2019 the show will celebrate its 21st birthday, making it the longest running sports production in New Zealand history, and fourth overall behind Country Calendar, Fair Go and Shortland Street. This year the show also has a new naming sponsor, SKY Sport.

SKY Sport GrassRoots Rugby will screen each Thursday for the next 15 weeks on SKY Sport 1 and Sundays on Prime.

The hour long show will kick-off at 7.00pm Thursday 16 May and will televise premier grade matches and also women’s, children’s, juniors, and presidents, as well as showcasing stories from the GrassRoots of our national game.

As a long term supporter of the show, SKY Director of Sport Tex Teixeira explains that SKY Sport is invested in the grassroots health of New Zealand’s national sport.

“It all starts at club level and the GrassRoots Rugby team have been doing a tremendous service to the game over the past 20 years by capturing it and promoting it. We’re proud of the naming sponsorship and are looking forward to a cracking season of SKY Sport GrassRoots Rugby”.

SKY Sport GrassRoots Rugby creator, Graham Veitch, says: “When I approached Bob Field at Toyota 20 years ago we had no idea that GrassRoots and Heartland Rugby shows would attain the longevity, the success and the iconic status they have achieved.

"This was a new and untried approach to marketing using the power of television to directly connect with the 640 rugby clubs and Heartland unions in New Zealand, those rugby club members, players, families, volunteers, spectators and the hundreds of local communities, towns and cities across our rugby mad country as well as the general public.

“We film stories about the clubs, their people and their community. We will never run out of heart-warming and interesting stories to tell. They are important to each and every club.

“From the club president and the committee to the club members who mark out the field, wash the jerseys, cook for the after match functions and the sausage sizzle, run the raffles to fundraise and partake in the club activities.
"They do this in the typical Kiwi manner.  It is in their genes. They are loyal to their club, their province, their All Blacks and their sponsors, and we get to showcase them on television.”

SKY Sport GrassRoots Rugby will screen each Thursday for the next 15 weeks on SKY Sport 1 at 7.00pm, with extensive replays available. Rugby fans can also catch SKY Sport GrassRoots Rugby on Prime from 1pm each Sunday.
