Editor’s Letter:

You could describe this issue of Skywatch as a celebration of the anti-hero. Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar®-winning turn as Batman’s misunderstood nemesis, the Joker, debuts on Sky Movies Premiere this month. We were lucky to get some time with the famously intense star and chat about this origin story movie about one of comic’s most-beloved villains.

There is nowhere the anti-hero is more celebrated than in a gangster movie – get ready to raise a glass to the who’s who of mobsters in Sky Movies Gangster Pop-up coming in July. Our very own Sky Movies team has carefully curated the channel featuring iconic movies from the gangster genre including The Godfather (all three parts), Bonnie and Clyde, Bugsy, and so much more. My personal recommendation would have to be Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas. I stumbled across it for the first time when I was 14 years old (don’t tell Mum!) and it ignited a lifelong passion for film – especially the movies of Scorsese and De Niro. It’s visceral, confronting, a masterclass in direction and performance, very human, and has a brilliant soundtrack.

It’s great to see more sport returning to our screens. This month, we shine a light on the NZ Badminton League, the PGA World Tour, and The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. Sport gets back up!

If you fancy a chuckle this month, make sure to tune into Sis on Comedy Central. This one-hour special from the creators of the web series Baby Mama’s Club follows the ‘ride or die’ friendships of cousins Malia, Gee Gee, and Miki. Made with the support of NZ On Air, the special will also screen on Prime later in the year.

As always, thank you for watching with us.

Take care,
